This is a great idea! I don't seem to have the problem of whatever I choose becoming the default, but my list of apps to share with is way longer (more cluttered) than it needs to be, as half of the things in it I would never need/want to use to share something. So for that reason alone (cleaning up the list to make it quicker/easier to use) this would be excellent. Especially if combined with other ideas about adjusting the app list based on context (i.e. different when something is shared from a text messaging app vs a browser vs a gallery or file manager).

This is a great idea. I've had this problem before as well, where I have apps that can open a certain file type, but they don't show up as an option. This would basically be like the "Open with..." option in Windows. It would also take care of https://betteropenwith.uservoice.com/forums/261986-general/suggestions/11361327-add-open-with (a duplicate request) and probably https://betteropenwith.uservoice.com/forums/261986-general/suggestions/6387481-add-phone-apps (also appears to be a similar request).

I think he's saying loss press on the item in the popup, not in settings. It's not a bad idea, but also only takes a couple more seconds to go into settings to do it and only has to be done once per file type, and going into settings allows for further customization that I always do anyway. Not saying it shouldn't be done or it's less important because I don't personally see much use, just discussing.

I don't have this issue on my rooted MXPE with stock ROM with MM (6.0).

That's how I understand it and just want I want. Of course, this would be an option that the user can choose to have it operate this way OR the default way (how it works now), preferably for each file type. And it could be a notification (have to pull down the notifications to access it) or, as I would prefer it, a toast notification. And the delay before it goes away as well as the location (top vs bottom) could be user-defined. If that's too much to have all those options defined by the user, then I suggest just using your own judgement as I'm sure however you decide to do it will be fine and it will just be nice to have this option.
